Zen, a Malaysian born, Singapore based designer has made his name as an innovative and visionary fashion designer. His humble beginnings started from sewing dresses from home and moving racks of designs to his clients’ houses before moving into the current showroom and workshop at Devonshire Road in 2012.
Zen made his first dress at the young age of 16 at a bridal shop where he was an assistant. He shortly became a professional hair and makeup artist that opened up his eye to the world of high fashion. Filled with inspiration and revisiting his childhood passion, all it took was one dress in 2009 and the label ZENCHI was born.
Now into the 5th year of business, Zen has forged an unmistakable style that has led to his designs being worn by fashion icons and celebrities locally and regionally, like Zoe Tay and Kit Chan. In 2013, Zen’s designs caught the eye of the British supermodel, Naomi Campbell who chose to model his designs for the Digital Fashion Week Singapore.
Known for his simple, understated luxury gowns, Zen prides himself on creating and draping flowy, elegant pieces from one continuous piece of cloth, as opposed to the conventional way of cutting out and joining panels of fabric. There are no drafts or drawings to Zen's dresses. Instead, he thinks of a woman for inspiration and starts his creations from there. To Zen, every piece is a new outcome; no two dresses are exactly the same.
